August is Psoriasis Awareness Month. Psoriasis according to the National Psoriasis Foundation is a skin condition characterized by an immune deficiency in the body producing red, scaly, itchy patches of irritated skin. It’s mostly on the knees, elbows, hairline, and even on the scalp. In some people it can appear anywhere on the body and isn’t limited to certain areas. Scientists aren’t sure where this disease comes from, other than the immune connection in the body. Genetics may be a factor that’s being studied to pinpoint where the disease’s origins. Certain triggers can make bouts with the disease worse, causing severe flare-ups. Sometimes lifestyle changes and diet can help to curb the symptoms.
Salt therapy or halotherapy is often administered in a salt room with walls covered with thick layers of salt. Generators are used to disperse salt in the air in the form of a dry aerosol. Salt helps kill bacteria, is anti-inflammatory, and can lower immunoglobulin E (IgE). IgE are antibodies that are produced by the immune system. Those who have psoriasis often have higher levels of IgE in their bodies. By reducing the number IgE antibodies, salt therapy can help the immune system become less susceptible to outbreaks. This causes the body to become more tolerable to triggers, decreasing the number and frequency of psoriatic outbreaks.
If you or someone you know suffers from psoriasis, don’t hesitate to try halotherapy at The Salt Suite®. Talk to one of our staff members today at a location convenient to you, about starting your own course of beneficial treatment.
“During a typical adult session customers put their feet up in a comfortable leather chair rest or read and breathe in a dry salt aerosol. The micro particles are blown in the air by halo generators. In our separate children’s room kids play in a big sand box except with salt on the walls and floor and play while breathing in the dry salt air.”
People who suffer from the psoriatic disease often use medical lotions, creams, and ointments, although they don’t always work when it comes to easing the symptoms.
That’s where salt therapy comes in.
